Hi everyone. First time poster here, but this is the reason I actually subscribed, so be lenient :)

This is more a solution in need of a problem than a problem in need of a solution. I like my games fast, and the fact is that for anything bigger than the easiest brawl, any combat is going to be at least an hour's worth of gametime (time it!). Now, combat itself (stunting and rolling) isn't that bad... my gripe is with declaration. The most tedious part has to be "let's go around in order of initiative to see what everyone's doing, and then go again after the rolls to see the results"

When I "met" ORE (through a friend's Godlike), I was amazed: the "speed" factor was built right in with Width. Incredible. So we could probably skip the boring declaration step, yes? .......Sadly, no.

So I'm thinking: how would an ORE version that lets everyone just about decide, roll, and resolve almost simultaneously work? Just the timing issues between Parrying, for instance, tell me this may not be as easy as I'd like...

I've thought about letting everyone decide and roll at the same time, and then resolve in increasing order of Width with the faster sets having the option to "interrupt", but what about surprises and other funky stuff? And this might need 1 or 2 extra rules to fit right.

Any of you have ideas on the topic, I'd appreciate. Else, well... it's just a bit of food for thought :D

Cheers,

--
Alex

Fluid Combat. You buy your action with your rolled Width. Nobody needs to declare anything before hand.

Wow! I wrote all that prose for a very simple answer, that gives me exactly what I'm looking for... except sadly it doesn't. :(

I've looked at Fluid combat (you're really talking about the one in Second Year of our Reign?), and there still is a Declaration phase, and everything still resolves exactly the same, unless there is something I'm missing. Biggest change is damage.

So, sadly, no dice, but thanks a lot.

So let's say:
- Don't declare anything, have confidence in your players not to cheat on the dicepool!
- Resolve everything in steps of Width, from narrow to wide: 2xN, 3xN, 4xN, and so on.
- You can change an action but it costs you a dice from a matching set (let's say you attacked with Body+Fight, but wish to Body+Parry instead).

Would that work you think?

What you do is seat the players according to their character's Sense + Coordination Stats. After they roll, they announce what their actions are from the lowest Sense + Coordination pool to the highest. This way the people with the highest Sense + Coordination pools can adjust their actions according to what the slower PCs do.

Although you don't need to do declaration for Fluid Combat.

I don't see why it wouldn't work to just go around the table clockwise or counterclockwise. If the situation calls for it, you skip out of order.

Yeah, I haven't really sweated order of declaration in Fourth Tier, Last Chance. If it seems to really matter who declares first, I look at the comparative Sense scores but mainly the players just sing out when they know their action.

"It doesn't really matter, unless it really matters." How's THAT for a wuss answer?
